About the USA
General Information
This section of the U.S. Embassy website contains links to a broad range of information about the United States, and should be particularly useful for school students and teachers in Norway who are learning and teaching about the United States. If you don't find the information you need below or in the list of links on the right, use the search engine above to search the entire Embassy Oslo website.
The Embassy has consulted with The Norwegian Board of Education to ensure that the linked resources are relevant to the curriculum set forth in "Læreplan for videregående opplæring: Engelsk - Felles allment fag for alle studieretninger" and "Engelsk studieretningsfag i studieretning for allmenne og økonomiske-administrative fag."
Teachers should be aware of the Fulbright Roving Scholar program, which sponsors American Studies seminars at elementary and upper secondary schools in Norway. They should also know that there is an essential organization created expressly for teachers/scholars of American Studies in Norway: ASANOR the American Studies Association of Norway. There is also an association for students of North American studies at the University of Oslo the Americanist: its Board publishes the online quarterly The Americanist, and organizes debates, symposiums, and social events.
For English teachers, Stewart Clark's web portal "English Matters" is a treasure trove. Although the site is weighted towards British English, there is much that will be of interest to all teachers of English in Norway, including resources on style, vocabulary, grammar, self-study, dictionaries and translation tools, and many other language and reference resources.
Note also the electronic journals created by the Society and Values division of the State Department's Office of International Information Programs. These are excellent teaching aids that cover a wide variety of topics such as sports, foodways, education, U.S. self-image, etc. Some of these publications are also available in hardcopy and may be obtainable from the U.S. embassy - direct inquiries to irc@usa.no. The U.S. State Department also funds the youth magazine Hi International, the English language version of the monthly cultural webzine Hi magazine published in Arabic. Hi magazine targets younger audiences, and dealis with families, friends, careers, beliefs, sports, musci, technology, education, and the potential of youth. It should also be a useful teaching aid for primary and secondary school teachers.
