Reports of Birth of an American citizen
The official record of a child’s claim to U.S. citizenship at birth for a child born abroad is a Consular Report of Birth Abroad of a Citizen of the United States of America. This document is considered a basic United States citizenship document.
The U.S. citizen parent must complete the DS-2029 application form and sign the application before a U.S. consular officer or a U.S. Notary Public. Personal appearance of the child and the U.S parent is required when the application is signed. The following documents must also be submitted:
The original documents will be returned. Proof of physical presence by the parents in the U.S. may be required in some cases. The fee for a Report of Birth Abroad of a U.S. Citizen is $65.00 the equivalent in Kroner. (See box on the right for the current exchange rate) Your child will also need a passport. The fee for a child's first passport is $85.00 or the equivalent in Kroner. See HERE for more information about the passport application.
U.S. law requires that U.S. citizens use U.S. passports to enter and leave the United States. A child born abroad who has a claim to U.S. citizenship should be documented as such with a Consular Report of Birth Abroad and obtain a U.S. passport before traveling to the United States. He or she should not travel to the U.S. on a Norwegian or other foreign passports. A child cannot be included in a parent's U.S. passport.
