Death of an American citizen
In the event of the death of an American Citizen in Norway, please contact the Embassy at +47 22 44 85 50 or via e-mail at osloamcit@state.gov.
The Embassy can help locate and contact family or friends of the deceased. We can also help arrange for burial or return of the remains. All remains shipped to the U.S. require a mortuary certificate, issued by the Embassy. Please contact us for more information.
Although the Embassy cannot pay for these services, we can help you find local service providers that will work to meet your needs.
The Embassy can also issue a Consular Report of Death of a U.S. Citizen Abroad. This serves as a death certificate for legal purposes in the U.S., such as insurance and probate. Please contact the Embassy for more information. There may be a fee for issuing this document.
