Thoughts and views from Fulbrighters in Norway

Fulbright Student Matthew David Hoffman:

"Like in the northeastern United States where I am from, wild and pastoral landscapes in Norway tend to be privately owned in small parcels.  Despite being fragmented into private ownerships like this, these landscapes still function in a unified way to provide such public benefits as grand scenery, recreational opportunities, wildlife habitat and essential ecological functions.  My research examines the both the legal and the informal social institutions in Norway that allow for this mix of private property and public benefit."

Fulbright Student Lauren Osen:

Lauren Osen is researching Norway's newest law concerning gender quotas on company boards, currently the only legislation of its kind in the world. The law went into effect on January 1, 2006, and requires that all companies listed on the Norwegian stock exchange meet 40% gender quotas on their boards of directors by January 1, 2008, or face delisting from the Norwegian stock exchange. Fulbright Roving Scholar Abbey Schneider:

As a Fulbright Roving Scholar in American Studies I meet 200-400 Norwegian students each week, and I am always sure to tell them how lucky I am.  Schools are not usually listed as cultural attractions in travel guide books and are not usually accessible to tourists, but as the Roving Scholar, I am invited to visit several schools across Norway each week. It is fascinating to observe how the subtle but significant differences between Norwegian and American cultures are reflected in schools. Visiting ungdomsskolen in Norway has been a great way for me to learn about what Norwegians value and a special opportunity for Norwegian teens to learn from an American about being American.
