Language for Leaders

This winter, from February to May, 2009, the U.S. Embassy, together with Lørenskog Videregående Skole (VGS), started a pilot language program; Language for Leaders (LFL). The aim has been to offer a small group of students an opportunity to practice and learn more about the English language than what they get during regular school hours.

Seven motivated students were chosen by Lørenskog VGS to participate, and for eight weeks they met regularly with the American English teacher Susie Meserve for classes, field trips and language practice. Grammar, American Culture, new words and phrases and vocational training were some of the aspects explored during the course, and the students received a well-deserved graduation certificate at the end.

Two of the seven students have plans to take the language learning even further next school year through high school exchanges to Idaho and Kentucky. The other five have ambitions to keep practicing their English as well as eventually taking whole or parts of their higher education abroad.

This year's program was a pilot program, but both Lørenskog VGS and the Embassy hope to continue the success next school year.
