Marriage Affidavits
Norway, as well as other civil-law countries, requires proof of legal capacity to enter into a marriage contract in the form of certification by competent authority that no impediment exists to the marriage. While no such document exists in the United States, there is a document that can be used in its place.
It is necessary for the U.S. citizen to a prospective marriage abroad to execute an affidavit at the American embassy stating that (s)he is free to marry. This is called an affidavit of eligibility to marry.
The fee for the American consular officer's certification of the affidavit is $30.00 or the equivalent in Kroner (See box on the right for current exchange rate). This can be obtained during regular consular hours. Please remember to bring your U.S. passport.
