Federal Benefits
Moving to Norway
If
you are planning to move from the U.S to Norway you should report your new
address to your benefit paying agency before moving. If you receive Social
Security benefits by direct deposit in the U.S, please do not cancel your U.S
bank account until you have established a Norwegian bank account. Please check
with the Federal Benefits Unit at the Embassy on arrival in Norway to ensure
that your records have been properly changed.
If you are planning to reside in Norway you will
be required to enroll in the Norwegian health insurance program. In order to
have medical coverage in Norway
one pays approximately 3.5% of all income (including pensions).
Unless you intend to return to the U.S, you may also wish
to cancel your enrollment in Medicare Part B for which you pay a monthly
premium. The Federal Benefits Unit can provide information and assistance.
If you are a Social Security claimant and change your
citizenship from U.S to Norwegian, the U.S tax law requires SSA to deduct 25.5%
in taxes from your benefits before they are paid.
